Visual Cultures of Disaster

In this seminar the students engaged with visual cultures and practices such as photography, cinematic and documentary film, art or media and how they are used to deal, cover, document disasters like war, natural disasters, or global catastrophes (e.g. the Corona pandemic). With a particular interest in visual and media anthropology, the class looked at the intersection of certain disasters and the transformation of life worlds in societies, social groups or communities and how visual and media cultures are employed to produce and circulate knowledge, share experiences or call for action.
